白樺の木 -shirakaba no ki draws its inspiration form the silver birch tree, the white bark that sheds its layers like tissue paper, revealing hidden colours and pattern. This is reflected in delicate hand-woven details layered with hand painted and block printed lengths of cloth. Each garment is in its essence one shape, with a front and a back but with no intended sides. Constructed in order to be wrapped around the body like the delicate bark layering and encasing the form. One might expect the enveloping cloth to diminish the wearers’ authority, but the effect proves to be exactly the opposite: the muffled shapes rear up imposingly, demanding respect.
